About

We are Anna Rice and Alex Hayton and for the next year we will be embracing slow travel by trying to journey around the world without getting on a plane. Armed with a well-thumbed copy of the Ethical Travel Guide and a small Eee PC, we will be aiming to eat local, sleep local and travel with as small a carbon footprint as possible. This is the story of our journey so far…

Sounds great, but have you left England yet?

      Hi Steddy,

Thanks for the message and sorry for the really slow reply! We have made it to Malaysia now, heading east to Hong Kong by boat, road and rail. We’re going to write about our cargo ship from Australia to here next. Have you got any recommendations for places to stop on the way? Hope you are well, what are you up to nowadays?

    Hi,

I am the publishing editor of 72&Rising Magazine, a magazine dedicated to all things water. The magazine covers everything from wildlife and conservation, science and research, people and cultures to photography, travel and adventure.

We are currently in the process of redoing our website where we hope to have submissions from a wide range of people that love and are involved in water in all its forms. I recently came across your blog and wondered if you might be interested in contributing an article with images to our site? We would of course include a link back to your website.

    Many thanks
    Rowena

Hi guys. Wishing you a lot of fun on the final leg! We finished a very similar journey last year (London – London; 2010 – 2012 with a 1 year stopover working in NZ) – never had the discipline to keep a blog but enjoying reminiscing vicariously through yours! Our little boy (now 10 months) was, er, “made in China” on the way home – glad we got the travelling done before he arrived! Are you continuing through Russia? We took the Kashgar – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbek – Turkmenistan – Caspian – Azerbaijan route through to Turkey. Only advice would be to prepare for mixed emotions on the channel crossing back to Blighty! If Zurich (CH) is on your route through Europe we’d love to offer you a place to crash! Good luck!

Hi Tim and Sarah. Thanks so much for getting in touch and sorry for the slow reply! So great to hear that you guys did a similar journey and glad to hear it finished with a very happy ending – hope you’re all doing well.

It sounds like you took a really interesting route – we’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on Turkmenistan etc. Thanks so much also for the offer of a place to stay, that is so kind of you – we’re actually back in England now, being a little behind on our blog writing – but really appreciate the kind offer…it was offers like that, which made the trip such a positive experience.

If you’re ever back in the UK and are London way do look us up :)

      Anna and Alex
